DNA grandparent testing
Grandparent DNA tests can be used to establish a biological relationship between an individual and one or both of their alleged grandparents.
A DNA profile for each individual is produced and the DNA markers are compared; biologically-related individuals tend to have more DNA in common than unrelated individuals. Our grandparent tests look at up to 45 DNA markers and examine the child’s DNA and identify which half is inherited from the grandparents.
Statistical analysis is performed taking into consideration the number of matches observed between the tested individuals and the frequency of the observed marker within the relevant population. The calculations performed result in a probability of relatedness.
An inconclusive result could be due to a low number of matching DNA markers shared between the tested individuals. Alternatively, the markers that are shared between the tested parties could be extremely common within the relevant population.
Grandparent analysis is not as conclusive as paternity or maternity analysis and should be used when it is not possible to perform other types of testing.
What is the difference between the standard and the enhanced test?
Our standard grandparent test is already industry-leading, as it analyses 25 DNA markers (the industry standard only analyses 16-21 markers).
What makes AlphaBiolabs unique is that we can also analyse up to 45 DNA markers. This allows more genetic material to be analysed, which strengthens the result and provides additional reassurance.
This is ideal for customers who want the most powerful DNA test available.
It is also particularly useful in tests of a more complex nature, such as a grandparent test, where the chance of obtaining a conclusive result will always be lower than the more straightforward paternity or maternity tests. This is because the DNA hasn’t been directly inherited. The enhanced test will increase the chance of obtaining a conclusive result.

How we do our DNA testing
We use state-of-the-art DNA technology to ensure the reliability and accuracy of our genetic testing. Our accredited laboratory also analyses up to 45 DNA markers: double the industry standard for DNA testing.
A Grandparent DNA Test requires mouth swabs to be rubbed quickly and painlessly on the inside of the cheek, to collect cheek cell DNA for testing.
The test looks at up to 45 DNA markers, analysing the child’s DNA and comparing it to the potential grandparent’s DNA, to determine whether a biological relationship exists.
Your test kit will be sent directly to your preferred address in discreet, plain packaging, for full confidentiality.
Enclosed in our DNA grandparent test kit:
- Full instructions on how to take the test
- A self-addressed envelope to send your DNA test samples back to us
- Three DNA sample collection swab packages containing two swabs each
- Individual sample envelopes for the alleged grandparent, mother (if available) and grandchild
If you want to test more than two people with the same test, you can add extra people when ordering the kit and more swabs will be provided (additional charges apply).
